Capo Milazzo

History

The itinerary begins with the beach Vaccarella, a fishing area, characterized by the boats lined up along the shore and nets spread in the sun. Just left, a look back to admire the ancient village and the walled city. Crossing in front of the beach "Croce di Mare", perhaps the oldest bathing places for Milazzese, characterized by a Madonna put on a rock. Continuing you come to the district Olive Green, dominated by the "Torre del Corvo" of the sixteenth century, converted in 800 by the British.

Leaving "Cala Oil" meets the "Cala del Pepe" where until not long ago there was a tuna and then arrives at "Punta Rugno" dominated by Villa Rizzo, who was the residence of Admiral Louis Rizzo, the much decorated hero of World War One. The place has a special sentimental value for all who passed Milazzese today to salute and a thought "their admiral. Shift towards "Punta Trifiletti" you can observe the "Cave of Gold", so named in memory of an old episode. It appears that the place during the war of 1718 between the German and Spanish has been used as shelter by some supporters in Spain.

The legend relates that they even managed to escape from the cave using the popular superstition that it considered that a sea monster to live and bribed with gold coins (hence the name of the cave) the Austro-Piedmontese sent warriors to capture them. Exceeded "Roll Back" is a whole succession of bays and beaches, not all easily accessible from the ground. The first of these is the "Paradise Bay", which takes its name from an effigy of the "Madonna of Paradise" kept in the private chapel of Villa Bonaccorsi that overlooks the same bay. Here the bottom, visible from above has a sandy bottom and rich beds of seagrass. Meet later Riva Smeralda tourist villages and Cirucco. Dubbed "Punta Mazza" opens the "Bay Renella", featuring a lovely white sand beach on one side and the beautiful scenery of the Aeolian Islands on the other.

Here is the "Secca di Levante" with clear waters and rich life. Extremity of the promontory, on a cliff overlooking the sea, called Salto del Cavallo, the Lighthouse of Capo Milazzo. Deserves to be reported the "Table of Baele" tied to an ancient story claiming that a baron Milazzese dined there with other guests during the low tide, leaving the mercy of the waves plates and silverware. Near the Punta Messina "(extreme tip of the promontory), opens a small cave called" woman's leg, the shape of a stone from the roof that plunges into the water. A short stretch again and open pools Punta Messina, "faced by the" Scoglio della Portella "(or" Artichoke "). Suggestive, among other things, the passage through the corridor of the sea between the tip and the rock of "Artichoke", but recommended only to boats of small draft. About a mile from the Point is the "Secca di Ponente" with a background variable from 10 mt. to 50 mt. Broken photos are interesting features of this dry place designated, inter alia, for the performance of Italian Championships and world of underwater photography. There are sheer cliffs full of caves and arches, where you can find the Anthias (fish typical of tropical seas) and the famous "black coral in the Mediterranean. The "Bay of St. Anthony" is without doubt the largest and most enchanting of the promontory. Exceptional, and the council, the sunset. The Bay is characterized by the remains of an old watchtower, from the evocative "Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua", the thirteenth century., Housed in a cave. On "Three Monte", the highest vantage point of the headland and overlooking the entire peninsula, an ancient church stands on the site, where the legend passed down to us the existence of a pagan temple dedicated to Diana, Apollo and Osiris.

On the coast, next to "Mount Trinity", there is the rock known for the macabre display of the heads of the hanged. A final stretch of the coast to reach, finally, the "Bay of Tone" (locally referred to as "Ngoni" etymon of Greek origin, indicating the beach "hidden" or mail protected from winds and waves), point of arrival of route. They deserve to be reported here: the "church of the fishermen", the old Grand tonnara currently used as a residence, the castle with its fortifications and, below, the legendary "Cave of Polyphemus." From here starts the beautiful Riviera di Ponente characterized by miles of wide beach.
