Salina

History


The island, off the coast tall and steep, it is the greenest of the archipelago. It consists of two volcanic peaks: Monte Fossa delle Ferns and the Mount of Leeks that gives it an aspect which was derived from the ancient name of the island: "Dydime" meaning "twin."

The current name comes from the salt pans in the southeast, behind points Language. The island is full of coves, including Pollara, with its beach and the houses of the fishermen abandoned, very scenic and not just at sunset; Rinella, with the suggestive and not just at sunset; Rinella, with its caves black converted into a small port.

In Santa Marina Salina was created the first real tourist port of the Aeolian Islands. Modern and functional with the mooring fee, assistance and services water, electricity and bathrooms. Starting from Santa Marina going to Punta Lamie and overcoming the plain of Baron are low, jagged coastline and then served up considerably to reach the rocky Cape Lighthouse, which stands overlooking the sea. After passing the leader, the coast is still steep and rugged, meeting groups of rocks (Torricella) and isolated rocks (Quartarolo), then the rock and reach Galera by port of Malfa. Going forward, the coast becomes considerably to the tip of wild Perciato overlooking the sea. After rounding the tip softens the coast in the Bay of Pollara with the rock of Faraglione. Farther south is the steep wire Branda and then reach the Praiola and past the Cave of Racine, the tips of Marcela and Megna, to reach the harbor of Rinella.

The coast is now again steadily until the valley of the Wolf and the Scogliazzo, piece of rock which separated from the mountain and finished in the sea. To the south the coast becomes steep again, pointed to the falconry Grottazzo. Language doubled point is flat along the beach to reach Santa Marina.
